Chapter 893 - Why is It so Hard to Have a Daughter-in-Law?

Grandpa Su took the rosewood box that had been placed on the table and thrust it toward Yan Qingsi.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about,” Mrs. Yue said, “Qingsi, hurry up and open it. See what it is. We don’t want it if it’s not something nice.”

Yan Qingsi had wanted to decline the gift, but she did not know how to decline it after what Mrs. Yue said.

She stood up and stepped forward. She took the box with both hands, her demeanor respectful. “Thank you, Mr. Su.”

Yan Qingsi was very elegant and polite. Grandpa Su silently approved of her. From what he saw, Yan Qingsi was neither haughty nor humble. She did not purposely flatter them either. She was a pretty decent young lady. Her character fit the image of what he had heard from others.

“You don’t have to be so formal around me anymore,” Grandpa Su said, “Just call me Grandpa, like Tingfeng.”

Yan Qingsi was silent for a while. She was not engaged to Yue Tingfeng yet; she should not address him the same way Yue Tingfeng did. “This…isn’t very polite,” she said, “I’ll just call you Grandpa Su.”

“Sure. Whatever you like.”

Mrs. Yue urged Yan Qingsi to open the box. She missed a beat before finally opening it.

There were two jade pendants in the box, carved into the shape of a dragon and a phoenix, the symbol of prosperity. The white tallow jade was smooth to touch, as though it could melt in one’s palms. Additionally, they looked as though they had been around for quite a few generations.

Mrs. Yue’s eyes almost popped out of her head when she saw that. “Holy cr*p. How generous of you, Dad. You guys didn’t even give me these pendants when I got married, although I wanted them… Hmph… How biased. I’m your flesh and blood!”

Grandma Su patted her daughter. “Why the fuss? You had such a huge dowry. Do you really lack this?”

They were elders; it was not easy for them to apologize to someone younger. However, they had been biased against Yan Qingsi at the beginning. Even now, Grandma Su had doubts about Yan Qingsi.

Still, they had asked them to visit so they could not take this meeting lightly. In the end, their apology was included in that precious gift.

Mrs. Yue grinned. “My daughter-in-law is great. She managed to wrench back what I wanted after thirty years.”

Yan Qingsi closed the box. “Thank you Grandpa Su and Grandma Su…” she said.

In the afternoon, Yue Tingfeng accompanied Yan Qingsi to go to her shooting location. “She’s not bad,” Grandpa Su said after she had left, “She’s polite. She has a good sense of propriety. She’s not any worse than ladies born into affluent families. The main point is that everything is fine so long as Tingfeng and Meimei like her.”

“Of course, she’s not bad if she’d managed to catch their eye. But…I’m still so distressed inside. Tell me, how could they look so similar? They resemble each other so much that I almost called her Peiwan a few times. No. I have to make a call, then we can talk more about this.”

Grandma Su called a number. The line went through, but she hung up after talking for a short while.

Grandpa Su noticed that her face had turned pale. “What happened?” he asked, “Tell me what happened.”

“Old Xia took the call. Peiwan is being hospitalized. I wanted to ask about her condition, and at the same time see if I can find out about that incident. But she…may or may not live to see the year.”

Grandpa Su removed his glasses. “Her entire spirit was lost ever since that happened.”

Grandma Su’s eyes reddened. “Oh yes. Old Xia told me that she doesn’t speak when she’s conscious in the hospital now, and she calls for her daughter’s name when she’s in a blur… It made my heart ache to hear that.”

Grandpa Su went silent, then he finally made his decision. “Never mind. This incident must be cleared up sooner or later since this child belongs to our family now. It would be easier if she really has nothing to do with the Xias. If she is related, we have to protect the child…”
